Mermaid Academy
Make A Tail Workshop

What

The Mermaid Academy is conducting a series of workshops to guide the aspiring mermaid through their transformation from terra-placed to aqua-based.  This session will enable you to create a unique mermaid costume, including a mermaid tail (fishtail skirt), embellished top, and subaqueous accessories.

Kids-Size classes use no-sew patterns to create simple open-end fishtail skirts.  These fun costumes simulate the mermaid experience on dry land, providing a safe play fantasy.  Fully compatible with the Guinness wardrobe guidelines, these tails are designed for participation in the world record attempt.

Adult-Size classes require nominal sewing skills to create more complex enclosed-fin fishtail skirts.  These ensembles are based upon designs and fabric selections compatible with water use.  Tops are also adorned to create a one-of-a-kind trousseau.

Why

Participate in the world’s largest Mermaid gathering!

One of the festival’s goals is to curate the world’s largest gathering of people dressed as mermaids (yes, this includes mermen too)!  Make your costume so that you are ready to participate in the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt for largest gathering of people dressed as mermaids - and mermen - on Saturday, May 26th from noon to 3:00pm at the South Beach Pier.

Only participants in full mermaid dress must be counted for the record. A full costume consists of a fish tail skirt of at least ankle length and costume top. Male participants may be shirtless but must wear the fish tail skirt. T-shirts and the like are not acceptable. The fish tail skirt does not have to enclose the feet with a swimmable flute.

Mermaids on land are not very mobile.  Therefore, it is recommended that you carry your costume and put it on after you have found a suitable sitting spot within the counting area.
